Parking
All parking on the U of A campus requires payment. The nearest parking is at Stadium Car Park, connected via direct pedway to the Students' Union Building and accessible from 116 Street NW. For larger & overheight vehicles, parking may be available on street-level stalls adjacent to Stadium Car Park as well as in the Varsity surface parking lot. More information on parking policies and available locations can be found on the U of A's Parking Services website.
Loading - Commercial Vehicles
The Students' Union Building loading dock is located on the north side of the building. Vehicles can access the loading dock via 116 Street NW using the directions found here. Use of the loading dock is limited to commercial vehicles only that are less than 3.9 metres in height and that are parked in the dock for no more than 15 minutes. The loading dock is extremely busy and we therefore ask that you move your vehicle as soon as you have completed your load-in or load-out.
Loading - Personal/Standard-Sized Vehicles
Due to the high volume of commercial loading traffic to the building, personal vehicles and other standard-sized vehicles should conduct their loading from their chosen parking location for the day, such as Stadium Car Park. We recommend bringing a cart or wagon with you to easily transport your materials from the car park to your table in the building -- barrier-free and stairwell-free access is available via level 5 (ground level) of the Stadium Car Park. You may either use the car park elevator to access the pedway to the Students' Union Building, or walk outside to a barrier-free exterior entrance to the Students' Union Building.
If you have a large volume of items to load in, please contact your client coordinator or our reception desk at 780-492-4241 well in advance of your booking date to inquire about possible short-term loading access closer to the building. Please note that this cannot be guaranteed.
Finding Your Table
Tables are placed on the primary corridors of the Main Floor of SUB. On the date of your tabling activity, you should find a table in the corridor labelled with your name/organization so that you can easily identify your assigned table. Please refer to our map of tabling zones for more specific information on common tabling locations. If you have any difficulty finding your table on the day of your event please call your client coordinator or 780-492-4241.
Students feel at home in the Students’ Union Building. One of the reasons the building is so successful (and busy) is that students can relax and enjoy the building as their “living room”.
For precisely this reason, we don’t allow unwanted solicitation of students in the building – students are more willing to visit and engage in the building when they’re comfortable.
Here are some suggested strategies that we’d recommend you can use to get the attention of the thousands of students that pass by your table in a given day.
Have your team look welcoming and approachable
- We regularly see tablers scrolling on their phone or typing away on a laptop. This does not feel inviting to students. Encourage/require your team members at the table to put away their phone and laptop.
Giveaways, giveaways, giveaways!
- Students love free stuff! Whether it’s a branded pen or phone stand, or an entry into a larger prize, this is one of the most effective ways to get students’ attention.
- Remember that the UASU sets limitations on food and drink giveaways, which must be requested and approved in advance.
- A fun call-to-action at the table can be even more enticing for students. Something like a “spin-to-win” wheel is a great option!
Clear & effective signage
- Consider large, clear signage that communicates your value proposition to students.
- It’s great to display your logo/brand so that students know who you are, but that doesn’t necessarily give them a reason to stop by your table.
- Use signage that clearly communicates your call-to-action or value proposition to students. Effective signage entices students to visit your table (e.g “Spin to Win free prizes”) or speaks to the specific benefit students can receive (e.g. "Summer Job Opportunities", "Get Your Student Discount", etc.).
- A tablecloth might seem like a small thing, but it will help separate your table from those on either side, is a great place to show your logo, and adds to the professional and cohesive look and feel of your table.
- Remember that any signage must remain within your allotted table space (a standard table space is 10’ wide and cannot encroach more than 6’ from the wall) and that backdrops or other large banners or furniture must be approved in advance by the UASU.
