Executive Committee

The Executive Team, comprising the President and four Vice-Presidents, is the forefront of the organization. They lead the way in establishing the organization's vision and priorities. They are responsible for the day-to-day operations, ensuring that the UASU functions seamlessly to serve and support undergraduate students throughout their university journey.

Meet your 2025/26 Executive Committee

The Students' Union President is the primary spokesperson of the Students' Union. This position oversees all the other executives, as well as the organization's strategy, operations, employees, advocacy and more! This wide-ranging position is responsible for an enormous range of tasks, including heading major initiatives, working with the Board of Governors and the General Faculties Council and advocating on behalf of students to the University administration and all levels of government.

Pedro (he/him) is your University of Alberta Students' Union President. He was born in Brazil and has spent his time at the UofA completing a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Immunology & Infection. During his time working at the Students' Union, Pedro has strived to create a better, more student-centred and affordable academic environment by fighting for change for UAlberta students.

Throughout his time at the U of A, Pedro has been a researcher, conducting research in glycans and Hepatitis A virology and has worked and volunteered as teaching assistant. He has also been involved in different positions, including serving as the President for the Interdepartmental Science Students' Society, a two-time UofA Senator and member of the General Faculties Council. Outside of student governance, Pedro loves to play chess, try his best at soccer and spend time with friends, his parents and his three sisters.

During his term, Pedro hopes to support the executive team as they work together to achieve their goals. He is striving to expand the opportunities for students to get involved in the UASU, to help elevate student priorities to the university and different levels of government, and to work alongside his team to support UASU operations.

The Vice-President Academic is responsible for all advocacy related to academic issues at the University of Alberta. This position sits on many board and committees, including the Students' Union Policy Committee, the General Faculties Council, multiple GFC standing committees and subcommittees, the Council of Faculty Associations and its working groups and more. It works closely with all of the student faculty and department associations to ensure that students receive the best possible education at the University of Alberta.

Katie Tamsett (she/her) is your 2025-2026 UASU Vice President Academic. She is completing her final year in a Bachelor of Science, Human Ecology Family Science degree. She will be enrolling in Open Studies as she is set to graduate in Fall 2025 of her term. Katie is very excited to advocate and engage in discussions with students. 

Katie’s goals this year include looking into how student feedback is utilised in academic settings such as the classroom. Another goal of hers is to develop menstrual accommodations for students. Katie is very passionate about women’s health and research and will be bringing forth her interest into the role. Her key priority will also be supporting student leaders in their advocacy efforts and working collaboratively with them. 

Katie served as president of the Faculty of ALES Undergraduate Association (FAUnA) and the ALES council representative for 2024-2025, where she was able to increase the visibility of FAUnA to students in ALES. She is looking forward to applying her experience into the role of VP Academic.

The Vice-President External is focused primarily on external advocacy, working with the municipal, provincial and federal governments on issues that impact students, such as tuition, financial aid, and student debt. The person in this position frequently meets with MLAs and MPs to advocate on behalf of students. The "VPX" works closely with post-secondary lobby groups, including the Council of Alberta University Students and the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations.

Abdul Abbasi (he/him) is your 2025-2026 UASU VP External. He was born in Kashmir and is now in his fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Law, Crime, and Justice at Augustana Campus. He is returning for a second term as your Vice President External, bringing strong relationships, valuable experience, and a continued commitment to student advocacy.

During his first term as VP External, Abdul led significant advocacy efforts focused on affordability, transit, and housing, working directly with municipal, provincial, and federal elected officials.

Throughout his time at the U of A, Abdul has been involved in student governance since his first year, beginning as an off-campus councillor in his faculty association and later representing the Augustana Campus at the Students' Union (UASU) and the General Faculties Council (GFC).

In his second term, Abdul is focused on building upon that progress, fighting for more post-secondary funding, increasing Work-Integrated Learning Opportunities, and enhancing student support.

Outside of governance, Abdul enjoys watching sports and spending time with friends.

The Vice-President Operations & Finance (also known as the "VP Ops Fi") oversees the UASU's $11 million annual budget, and is responsible for policy and strategy at the UASU's many businesses, including Dewey's, Room at the Top, the Daily Grind, SUBprint and more. This position also helps oversee the operation of the Students' Union Building, including tenancy agreements, and sits on a variety of committees and boards related to the dispersal of Dedicated Fee Units.

Nathan Thiessen (he/him) is your 2025-2026 UASU Vice President Operations & Finance. Entering his fourth year of an honors political science degree, Nathan has been involved on campus through the Organization for Arts Students and Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Alberta Debate Society, and the University of Alberta: Alberta Youth Parliament. Having served two years on the UASU Students’ Council, University of Alberta General Faculties Council, and various boards and committees across campus prior to his time as Vice President Operations & Finance, Nathan is passionate about serving his peers and advancing the welfare of students.

During his term, Nathan strives towards leaving behind a campus better than when he first found it. Ensuring that the operations and the UASU is sustainable and that students are supported in initiatives towards such ends, that students and campus partners are engaged with to ensure no one is left behind and we build up a campus community together, and that we envision a campus and a UASU that critically reflects on the past, faces the challenges of the present, and plans for a stronger future are principles that Nathan holds dear and wishes to exemplify in his work.

The wide-ranging portfolio of the Vice-President Student Life includes non-academic advocacy on issues that impact students, which can include everything from mental health to residence. The VP Student Life is also the executive responsible for much of the programming and events put on by the Students' Union, as well as services like the Peer Support Centre.

Logan West (she/they) is your 2025-2026 UASU Vice President Student Life. She was born and raised in Edmonton and is currently completing her Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies and Film Studies, with a certificate in International Learning. Logan has worked for University of Alberta International, served as the Vice President Outreach and Events of the Organization for Arts Students and Interdisciplinary Studies, and has previously worked with the UASU as the host of Karaoke and Music Bingo at Dewey’s. Outside of governance, you can find Logan listening to podcasts about film and politics, going for long evening walks, or spending time with her friends.

This year, Logan hopes to continue the efforts of past executives in enhancing safety and wellbeing, revitalizing indoor and outdoor spaces, and building trust and strengthening outreach with the student body. They will be working on initiatives such as awareness campaigns for sexual health and sexual and gender-based violence and improving ONEcard access and internal pedway systems across campus. She will also be working on implementing a vehicle service for equitable mobility across campus and looks forward to communicating with students through social media and by publishing monthly articles in The Flame.

Executive Sub-committees

The Sustainability Committee helps guide the UASU's sustainability practices in the areas of governance, operations, services, advocacy, and events.

Up to four Students-at-large may serve on this committee.

Called the 'living room of campus,' the Students’ Union Building (SUB) is a hub of student activity and home to many of the UASU’s businesses and services. Whether in need of a cup of coffee, a place to print your notes, or a place to study, SUB is the building that caters to the student experience. Members of this committee have a variety of responsibilities connected to how SUB meets student needs.

There is a total of three Student-at-large positions on this committee. At least one of the students-at-large on this committee must be an Indigenous student, so First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit students are encouraged to apply. This position is open to all faculties, and all experience levels are welcome.

The SUB Art Committee informs the selection and display of UASU-owned art in SUB.

Up to three Students-at-large can serve on this committee.

Health and Dental Plan Committee (HDPC) expectations include but are not limited to:

  • Offer strategic advice and support in the ongoing development and negotiations surrounding the Health and Dental Plan.
  • Work in conjunction with the Health and Dental Plan provider, the Students’ Union management, the Vice President Student Life, and the Vice President Operations and Finance to appraise and disseminate messaging relating to the Health and Dental Plan.
  • Appraise and review developments related to other student associations’ policies, procedures, and practices surrounding their Health and Dental Plans.
  • Assist with the coordination of qualitative and quantitative student consultation to identify student needs and inform future recommendations to the Health and Dental Plan.
  • Maintain an active awareness of the details and logistics surrounding the current Health and Dental Plan.
  • Support the Students’ Union in resolving strategic and relevant concerns brought forward by constituency members.

Up to three Students-at-large may serve on this committee, all of whom must also be opted into the Health and Dental Plan. Experience with analyzing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data is essential.

SGC has a wide variety of functions related to student groups. This committee may be called upon to play a role in investigations and discuss confidential information. Committee members are expected to attend as many meetings as possible, and carefully review all meeting materials in advance so they can make informed decisions fairly and without bias.

Up to four Students-at-large may serve on this committee, with two SALs required to be current executive members of a student group registered and recognized by the UASU.
